Deadlines in Calendar Year 2023 for 2022 Returns

Deadlines for annual returns are almost invariably in the spring, with extensions available until the fall:

  • Individual income tax returns: For 2023, tax day falls on Tuesday, April 18.

Tax day customarily falls on April 15. But in 2023, that date falls on a Saturday; the following Monday is Emancipation Day, which is recognized as a holiday in Washington, D.C. As a result, tax day has been pushed back until the following Tuesday. Most taxpayers will have nearly three months to gather income statements, fill out a return, and pay outstanding taxes. The IRS has said that this year’s tax season, when it accepts returns, starts Jan. 23.

  • Estimated tax payments for the 2022 tax year (IRS Form 1040): For 2020, these were due on July 15 and Sept. 15. There usually would have been two additional payments for the first and second quarters on April 15 and June 15. Still, the IRS pushed them back due to the coronavirus pandemic. The fourth and final estimated payment for the 2020 tax year is due on Jan. 15, 2021.
  • Partnership returns (IRS Form 1065): March 15, 2023: This is the tax filing deadline for S-corporations and partnerships to file their 2022 business returns. April 18, 2023: Corporations must file their 2022 business tax returns by this date.
  • C-corporation income tax returns (IRS Form 1120): If you’re a C corporation or LLC electing to file your taxes as one for 2021, your corporate tax return is due on April 18, 2022—unless you use your own fiscal calendar, in which case it’s due on the 15th of the 4th month following the end of your tax year.
  • S-corporation returns (IRS Form 1120-S):An S corporation is required to file its annual tax return by the 15th day of the third month following the end of the tax year, generally March 15, unless this date falls on a weekend or holiday. The business reports all financial activity on Form 1120S and attaches a Schedule K-1 for each shareholder. These Schedule K-1s report each shareholder’s share of the business’s taxable income so they can report it on their personal returns.
